Re: Mainstage 2011

How about we just ask someone about greening up and voice why we are concerned, this shows the university that we have the initiative to ask about things that we don't know about and are actually taking some possibly sensitive issues into consideration. This is the only way we could possibly lay this debate to rest finally. Ask the university, get their blessing or denial and be done with it.

I agree Thurston. I have already considered doing this.

If you need flyers, Ame just made us some that are current. I have them in an email and can get them to you if you want. Also there is a picture board in existence if you wanted to use it, last I knew it was with Brinje.

Moving to another topic. I think it might be time to get an updated picture board, or possibly use a laptop at the table (since two or three someones should be there at all times) to show pictures or parts (emphasis on PARTS) of various Rag DVDs.

Re: Mainstage 2011

If the theatre RSO/fraternity can paint themselves up into various characters ie) witches, fairies, and other silly things that include pink, blue, purple, and yes GREEN skin and prosthetics, then I really don't think a group of larpers will be judged on having at least one greenskin or blueskin present at mainstage. It's part of the atmosphere of the game. How is it any different than being on campus at an event or practice and being green... there is the same exposure to the same people walking by. =]

At the same time, I think it's not a bad idea to find someone to talk to or ask and get a yay or a nay.

I think we all need to have a little more faith in race... the HUMAN race. If someone is that offended by being painted green, then they wont play, and that is no loss because whether we're a green unit or not, there will be other greenskins in other units that they would see at events. If anything it garners more attention, and that's what we need right now, because we need more active CMU students involved. =]

The Important Bit:
I'm not worried about offended people not playing, I'm worried about offended people bitching to the university that we are racists and getting our RSO-hood revoked.

The addressing individual parts bit:
Also, the theatre department gets the shield of be classified as an art. We do not. It's different because chillin on campus entire RSOs aren't walking by looking for a way to recruit and draw attention to themselves.

Maybe I'm just old and bitter. If people want this reconsidered, which appears to be the case, then the officers will vote on it, and fury peeps should make their feelings on such known so the officers can discuss it taking everyone's opinions into account.

If someone expressed disinterest in us to the university because we have people painted blue or green, CMU isn't just going to be like, "Yep, okay, RSO status REVOKED!! suckerrrrs" If anything, they will come to us with the issue and give us a chance to explain that we are a fantasy reenactment group and that it's just part of 'the game'. If they didn't find that a suitable answer, then we would just agree to not green up on campus any longer.

And Dagorhir is an art. We dress up and play make believe just like theatre majors. And entire rso's DO walk around campus drawing attention to themselves for recruitment, that's how you recruit. All of the Acapella groups (which are rso's) essentially flash mob various parts of the campus singing and dancing to get people to notice them. Being green and/or dressed in garb, fighting in the courtyard is the same thing. =]

CMU isn't as awful about student involvement as people might think. =]

Things have changed since this issue (greening up) came around initially. The Fury has grown as a unit and as an RSO, and has come to be increasingly more visible and recognizable to the campus community at large. Our members have become more active both in unit and in charitable activities as well. Anyone who might have had a problem with it a year or two ago now has a better chance of knowing better, or at least having their complaints fall on more Fury-sympathetic ears.

I think that asking permission might be a good idea, but it also might just be asking to be told no. Either way, if at this point the Fury can't survive a scandal in the public eye of the university, then we never will. Part of earning respect is convincing people that you deserve it. If we have goblins running around and don't make a big deal out of it, it shows that we're confident and proud of what we do, even if it's a little silly.

Utimately the goblins are a part of this unit and deserve to be represented as much as any other group. Now that we've established more of a presence at Central, it's time to let them green up.

The board was already planned. I am remaking it with the help of Meg. The computer would be cool too.
