Hafnir's Backstory

So, in an effort to seek some external validation before I officially submit my back story here's my intro to Hafnir Stouthammer:

The cold tore him from a deep sleep.

Hafnir jerked aright, shivering yet covered in sweat, he hurriedly scanned his surroundings, sword in hand. The camp was still, no sounds but the crackle of a dying fire and the slow breathing of his slumbering comrades. Both of which were quickly succumbing to the sharp, laborious breaths of the near frantic Hafnir.

Slowing his breathing through great effort, he sought to calm the raging storm threatening to tear his mind apart. He reminded himself that it was still summer, his camp was well defended by trusted friends, and they were not in danger yet.

The cold swept over him again.

His gut twisted in knots, his vision blurred, the world spun ‘round threatening to upend the dinner Major Toland had prepared. It was worse tonight, it had been getting better. But he had been too complacent, had rested too long, and had grown too soft.

The pain began to subside; his eyes began to focus again. His lesson had been learned, apparently. He began to take stock of his surroundings in earnest. His friends, Eldgrim, Finn, Mav, Thorgrim and others slept about the camp. Sethrin was walking guard on the perimeter. It wasn’t their fault. The summer had been quiet and the action scarce. It wasn’t their fault.

He finally became aware of the vice-like grip he had on Eckhardt, his sword. His eyes flowed along the edge of the blade, following the faint lines of its expertly crafted folds. His breathing increased but this time it was from excitement, for he knew what was coming. They were on the move, following word that a band of Maegamarth’s followers were in the area.

Battle was near, and the sound of horns echoed in his ears.

Straight baller, Stouthammer. Have you decided where you are from? Most of us are from the Hithdor area (one of the few regions of the continent not ravaged by Maegamarth) and that's where we are as a unit right now. However, we'll soon be on the march to join the Eryndor Crusade, and you can roll up on us anywhere along the way.

Re: Backstory

Well the way I'm writing is from this point, when I'm a part of the fury. With a series of flashbacks to tell the beginning. I was thinking about being a survivor from a decimated area, but don't know where that should be, who fell into being hired muscle in a city, prolly Hithdor if it would be large enough to have a seedier side.

My real problem is a lack of knowledge on recent Eryndor history.

Both Hithdor and Duindor are cities large enough to have a darker side, Duindor is actually known for it's "seedier" side.

If you want to be from somewhere that was decimated, there are a few rules (mostly because people have already established that they are the last survivors of a certain village or something and you don't want to !@#$ in their cereal)

Your Friend

As for the unit's story so far and where you can fit into that, I'm more then likely going to be putting together a post in the near future (read - now if i finish it before class) that is a timeline of the Fury's journey in line with recent Eryndor history. Even though we've been at events, our official joining up storyline wise is looking like it's going to take place at the day event October 10th and the story for how that happens will more then likely play out there.

Stonetred is already off fighting with the Crusade, and we're running late to the party. There will definitely be some people in our unit who will recognize him and a few others from the Hithdorian military, though... wink wink Fairion wink.

Re: Backstory

Here's the part of my story that actually has to do with how Hafnir joined Fury (It follows previous submission chronologically, Italics are flashback):

The camp was bustling the next day

Yurts were struck and bedrolls packed as the unit readied for the day’s march. Zimsa returned from the morning hunt with the new recruits. Nothing readied one so quickly for battle as hunting boar, and these new comrades needed to learn fast.

Hafnir observed the camp as he rested beneath a nearby oak. He had packed in the night, unable to sleep with the prospect of battle on the horizon. He watched as Master Enderu woke the Viking brothers from their comatose state with his boots. The Vikings seemed unable to do naught but fight, drink and !@#$ no matter the occasion or what waited on the morrow, and as a result tended to sleep past noon. Thorgrim, the big one, jumped with a start and took one long and drunken swing at his early morning tormentor. Sethrin had no problem dealing with the inebriated man; he was used to much more deadly fare.

The small incident, a common occurrence among the Fury, reminded Hafnir of the first time he saw Thorgrim and Sethrin combat each other. How he subsequently came to recognize his true calling and to join the Fury one year ago that rainy night outside Hithdor…

Hafnir burst through the entrance of the Red Rose, dragging its latest unruly patron out into the rain by his hair. Hafnir dropped the bloodied and bruised man in the mud of the street and walked past the gentleman’s limping comrades, heading back towards the Red Rose. Hafnir began to take stock of his own injuries, starting to nurse a strained shoulder and working over a newly loosened tooth with his tongue.

The tavern was the only establishment of its kind in this !@#$ hole sized town outside of Hithdor. Hafnir didn’t miss much of Duindor, but he did miss the challenges. Sure, he got to beat out some of his rage on random drunken farmers at least once a week here, but it was nothing compared to the everyday struggle of defending your territory in a street war.

Hafnir was snatched from his thoughts as two men crashed into the street. One man, a large and intimidating creature bore down upon the other, sword held high over his head as he bellowed like nothing Hafnir had heard before. The other, which had some peculiar looking facial hair, nimbly dodged the giant, easily side-stepping his powerful but clumsy strikes.

Hafnir doubted the nimble one needed his help, but if the giant wasn’t careful Hafnir was sure he’d end up gutted on the street this night. While Hafnir cared not if this giant fell, he’d be damned if anyone in his town fell by a hand other than his own.

Hafnir pushed aside the pains he felt and barreled into the fight at full speed. He aimed for the lumbering giant, lowered his shoulder and drove him to the ground. His shoulder reminded him not to work too hard, but the giant had other ideas. This man, if you could call him such, was every bit as strong as he looked. As Hafnir struggled to gain control over him, he could hear the brawler laughing most exuberantly. It was an oddly disarming laugh of joy and kindness which did not match the bloodlust Hafnir had surely seen in his eyes earlier.

The fight seemed to be going Hafnir’s way when he was struck by the oddly-bearded one from behind. This new development confused Hafnir as he didn’t expect the victim of this apparent assault to object to being aided in not dying and stuff.

This confusion combined with the hefty blow he’d just received to allow the other to haul Hafnir off the giant. In an effort to confuse him further, the nimble one merely set the now muddy and addled Hafnir upright and asked “Are you okay, guy?”

“I’m fine, sir”, replied Hafnir, “yet my name is not Guy.”

The other laughed. A full-bellied affair that set his twin beards to motion. “My name is Sethrin; my large friend here is Thorgrim. What would your moniker be?”

Hafnir shook his head, driving away the last remnants of haze, “Hafnir, Hafnir Stouthammer. What in the Nine Hells is going on here?”

The one called Thorgrim was still laughing, albeit now it was more along the lines of a chuckle. Sethrin and Thorgrim explained how they had been training together, preparing to join the Crusade with their unit, the Fury of the Called. Hafnir had never heard of the Crusade, though he knew of Maegamarth and the undead. Hearing what these men were doing, what they fought against, was like seeing the sun for the first time. His world made sense, his purpose was clear, he knew what to do.

The next day he packed his things and joined the Fury’s camp. And for the first time in his life, the cold ache in his gut was gone.

“HAFNIR!”

His reverie was broken by the call, as his wife Freja, waved him to the now rolling train of soldiers. It was time to move on.
