After all, it's pretty obvious you don't need a soul to live: look at lawyers. And...big post there Mr Plaid. I like it! Always helpful. I'm actually looking to try and base my character off of a bit of history. It's pretty stupid, but my bloodline can be traced back to a king of England. His name was Edmund Ironside. He ruled in 1016 and wasn't a king for long (less than a year...maybe not even half a year, really), but I always thought it was kind of cool. I'm seeing a lot of heat comments, so I'll back off of the velvet. I was iffy on it anyways, really. I've actually done a LOT of digging, more so than you might expect to find from a normal newcomer. I'm a bit thorough with things that interest me. I've dug through a lot of the rules on weapons and weapons checks, I've read all of the tutorials on Dagorhir.com and I've looked through all three pages of threads in this subforum here. I was iffy on the hosen, but they might not be so bad. I dunno, they just kind of remind me of tights or something. The Bocksten tunic interested me a great deal, actually. Unfortunately I'm inept at anything involving making clothing, so I stepped off a bit towards the basic t-tunic. If it comes down to it, my mother and father are excellent with a sewing machine. I'd rather avoid it though because my dad'll hang this over my head for years while silently wishing he could do it. nondisclosed_email@example.com (itiskindacomplexicated)Thu, 05 May 2011 20:12:07 +0000 Re: Garb Questions for a Newb! Be gentle, it's my first...https://bfuryofthecalled.runboard.com/p3243,from=rss#post3243https://bfuryofthecalled.runboard.com/p3243,from=rss#post3243Alrighty! Welcome to the best part of this game...Dressup! Keep in mind who you want to be. Characterization is based 100% on your garb. You can't be a drow if you are wearing scrub pants and a tabard over a tshirt or a knight if you are wearing the same stuff. So keep that in mind when you begin looking into what to wear. Second, think about what weather you will be fighting in. I usually reccommend people have warm and cold weather garb so they can fight whenever and not look like some Jabron in a drug rug at events. Natural fibers (Cotton, Linen, Wool) are very breathable and will help you regulate temperature in the warmer months and help in layers in the colder months. Velvet will likely allow you to experience heat stroke if you haven't ever experienced that, especially if you wear it on the field at Ragnarok. Wrap pants are cool if you want to look like a thai fisherman (I have a pair for my goblin persona), otherwise Hosen and Rus pants are very easy to make and will help you look awesome from the start. (The Dagorhir National Boards have tutorials for all of these Dagorhir.com ) Likewise both of these will cost you about 3 dollars in fabric (more if you want Linen...which you can find in old sheets if you're lucky) You will also need a tunic. Once again, the dagorhir boards will have resources on sewing this stuff (about 3 hours of hand sewing if you learn fast). You can either start with a simple t tunic (Basically a long tshirt) or an evolved form of that, the Bocksten tunic (A long tshirt with some more flair and historical accuracy). Get a cheap belt, belt up your tunic and wear some dark shoes...if you're really gung-ho about getting cool garb, look into buying or making leather turnshoes...the medieval sneaker (someone might be able to help you make those). All in all Invest in easy garb for your starter garb and work up to velvet for your fancy feast/night garb. (I have a few basic tunics, Rus pants, Wrap pants and a Kilt, and a Silk coat for nightlife). Remember that people will remember you by how you look. Why not put a little effort into yourself, and by association your game. (ALSO, I posted a thread about Bargain Garb on our boards a few months back, that is a great place to start)nondisclosed_email@example.com (Mr Plaid)Thu, 05 May 2011 19:58:37 +0000 Re: Garb Questions for a Newb! I don't have many full bolts of cloth on hand that isn't velvet, unfortunately. There's a large amount of velvet here. The rest is pretty much scraps from other pieces, silk, or just horrible colors/prints. I suppose I could check out Joann's first and see if I couldn't find a good deal before using the velvet, though it will hurt my soul to us money that I don't necessarily have to. My poor, poor soul...nondisclosed_email@example.com (itiskindacomplexicated)Thu, 05 May 2011 19:49:36 +0000 Re: Garb Questions for a Newb! These tend to be fancier things that people don"t want to get dirty or sweaty. Also cloaks or period coats or other things to keep you warm at night or in the fall might be a better option for your velvet. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Fenris Kelevra)Thu, 05 May 2011 18:14:50 +0000 Re: Garb Questions for a Newb! I really like the last idea and I did notice that the thing gets dirty easy. The cloth is going to be sitting around anyways, so maybe that would be a good idea and if that doesn't end up working for me...coupon game? Also, thanks for the pants links Toland! I'm not sure about the hakama, but the wrap pants should be easy enough to make and would work just fine. Also, thanks for being gentle with me. nondisclosed_email@example.com (itiskindacomplexicated)Thu, 05 May 2011 15:51:03 +0000 Re: Garb Questions for a Newb! But I understand how economic constraints can be. If you do decide to use velvet I'm going to recommend making it a tabard style (don't sew up the sides) that way you can still get airflow and get a similar look with a belt.nondisclosed_email@example.com (TheManTheyCallJayne)Thu, 05 May 2011 12:06:13 +0000 Re: Garb Questions for a Newb! Be gentle, it's my first...https://bfuryofthecalled.runboard.com/p3227,from=rss#post3227https://bfuryofthecalled.runboard.com/p3227,from=rss#post3227I don't see why velvet would be a problem rulewise, but it is going to be very hot in these summer months (which is the primary event season). A few alternatives is playing the coupon game at joanns. They usually have coupons for 40%-50% off their fabric in the store, the trick is that they are always for the next week. So go in this week, grab coupons and come back next week to buy cheap fabric. The other option is Goodwill or Salvation Army. These places are nice to pick up cheap beginner garb. I know that Goodwill also offers a student discount if that does apply to you. If you have anymore questions everybody is pretty helpful.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Fenris Kelevra)Thu, 05 May 2011 11:56:11 +0000 Re: Garb Questions for a Newb! For those of you who don't know me (all of you, seeing as this user name isn't a real hint), my name is Skyler. I've attended the last two practices and had a lot of fun getting my ass kicked repeatedly so I'm looking to join you guys. Now, I like to jump the gun a bit with everything I do so I'm already looking to make some weapons and garb of my own. Currently, I'm working on the problem of garb. I don't have a lot of money to run off of here, so I wanted to ask a couple of questions before I just do it and fail miserably. 1. Currently all I have in way of fabrics in the color I want for this tunic is velvet. Is velvet an acceptable fabric for garb wear? 2. If it is acceptable I have yet another question: Would I need to worry about the durability of velvet on the field? 3. If it is not, could one direct me to where I might purchase a more acceptable cloth at a reasonable price? Also, I have one final question: I've been doing a lot of digging these last few days for good tutorials on garb. I'm finding a severe lack of tutorials for garb pants. As I'm not looking for the freedom of a kilt, could someone direct me to a tutorial somewhere?...nondisclosed_email@example.com (itiskindacomplexicated)Thu, 05 May 2011 06:27:34 +0000
