Cool Kid Event Prep - Weekend campouts

So, you want to be a cool kid and go to an event? Fantastic! Events are baller, and here are some pro-tips for taking care of yourself and on how to NOT be a nuisance.

Step 1: Get yourself there
     Carpool!

Step 2: Bring some stuff

Tent (you sleep in this)
Something to sleep on and something to keep you warm. Especially later in the year it can get cold; bring more blankets that you think you need. Bring at least a camp pad (blue foam lulz) to sleep on. Ground is uncomfortable, so are shields, ask Finn emoticon Don't forget a pillow like Nova tends to do.

Garb (you wear this)
at least two sets, so you can fight in one and be all smelly and nasty, and a set for at night so people don't run away from the stank. Also bring more socks and underwear than you think you need. If you can bring a plastic bottomed/sided container to put your clothes in in case your tent floods (who wants wet undies? not Nova). I use a plastic clothes basket to carry basically all of my stuff.

Weapons (you hit people with these)
Your choice, but bring some backups in case of breakage or failure.

Hygiene products (you smell less rank with these)
Nobody will want to be your friend if you smell nasty. Don't smell nasty, bring stuff to shower and deodorant. Don't forget to bring a towel!

Step 3: Feed yourself

Pro-tip; make friends with people and pool om nom resources.

Breakfast: I'm lucky and have a little cookstove and so I get to have my event breakfast preference; eggs + tortilla + hot sauce and maybe bacon if I'm feeling like an overachiever. In any case, you should definitely eat breakfast, and a hearty one at that. Bagels, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, a sammich; whatever. You want a solid breakfast because....

Lunch??: Is sort of nonexistant, at least for me. Generally weapons check is at 11, and fighting starts shortly after. I don't like eating a bunch right before fighting, so I don't. I go, I fight, and sometime while I'm fighting I go crap I'm hungry. I take a water/snack break and have greek yogurt. It's teh perfect fight break snack, protein and tasty and om nom nom. My favorite is chobani. But in any case I don't plan a formal lunch, just a snack.

Dinner: Friday in general you're on your own. I bring sammiches and/or brats to cook on my sweet cookstove or something equally simple. Supplement with fruits and veggies. Don't feed yourself absolute crap after a day of fighting, you need the good stuff to keep you fighting the next day. Find out ahead of time if there is a feast on Saturday night so you know if you need to plan for two dinners.

All of these things should be stored in a cooler. Bring zip lock baggies to keep (meats especially) things out of the water that inevitably fills your cooler as the ice melts. Be careful about how you store and make sure your stuff is staying cold, you don't want to make yourself sick because of poor camp food hygiene. Bacteria would love you eat you!

Also bring cutlery and a plate. Try to find a plain metal or wooden plate; something that is "period" or at least unobtrusive. Thrift stores are great for this! Don't sweat it if you don't have anything yet.

Step 4: Party!!
Beverages and Booze and Being Responsible
I drink tons of water during the day and as an individual who is over 21, I bring booze for myself and a little to share. If you're under 21 please don't drink. Nobody is going to give you !@#$ if you say no to alcohol, and if they do tell em to shove it. Underaged drinking is something nobody wants to deal with. Those of you who are of age and do choose to drink don't ruin it for the rest of the campout by being belligerent, sick everywhere, inappropriate or in general a pain in the ass. Know your limits and take care of yourself and respect your fellow dagorhirrim. Be respectful of the rules of the site, the property you are camping on, other people's property and personal space. Don't be an ass <3

That being said, enjoy the event. Talk to people, fight people, laugh with people. Branch out from the fury (though we are awesome)meet people from other units and have a baller time!

If I've forgotten anything, please add it!

Make sure when selecting a pillow it is comfortable when not paired with a bed, what may be fine then may be severely lacking when you're on the ground and it sucks fighting all day with a crick in your neck. Also without a pillow you have no where to talk about http://furypillowtalk.ytmnd.com/

I don't think you forgot anything. I just think this part is what makes future events even more fun.

A bit of a resource on eating that I learned at Bo5a (it was good for something apparently): If you want to eat REALLY well on a campout and own a cooler, pre-prepare some hearty potato and meat spreads/ fillings (if you're vegetarian try a chickpea spread...camping falaffel? !@#$ yeah), freeze them and then throw them in your cooler. Not only will they act as icecubes for cooling your other food, but when prepared they make delicious full meals, especially when paired with some flatbread (which you can make with a 2.5 to 1 flower to water ratio dough).

My next campout I plan on only bringing frozen meals and flatbread dough and dining on the finest of medieval hotpockets.

A note on weather related issues

Hot weather: Drink water, don't let the heat keep you from eating. Drink less booze. Stick to the shade when not fighting and in general be aware of yourself. If you have to take a break take a break, no harm in being a sloth but heat exhaustion can ruin your weekend.

Cold Weather: If you're like me you have a crappy sleeping bag. I bring comforters, and shove them inside my 40 degree rated sleeping bag and make a little NovaNest. Bring extra blankets, bring extra layers of garb, invest in a cloak/caftan and/or wool. There's nothing worse than not having enough warmth when you're trying to sleep. If you're unprepared, go hug Tywin.

Also, if its cold still drink lots of water. I've seen many a person get sick or pass out because it wasn't hot so they didnt feel like drinking.

Also you may want to bring some sort of light source. It can get pretty dark and you might not always be around a fire. Bug spray and sunscreen are also nice too.
